Julia Woning was born on August 7, 1969 in Rotterdam, and from 1990 to 1994 she studied at the Academy of Visual Arts (now: Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam) gaining a Major in Illustration.
She works as a sculptor, freelance illustrator and portrait painter. In the early stages of her career, she worked through an agency called Top Drawers in Amsterdam. Julia has created illustrations for, amongst others, Esso, Shell, Job Agency Start, Safari, Rabobank, Admiralis, FNV allies etc. Today she works as an independent artist on clients’ assignments.
Since 2008 she has been involved with the Fat Ladies project, illustrating cheerful female figures in everyday situations. She gets inspiration from everywhere, and is constantly on the lookout for images of happiness, atmosphere, proportion, form, structure and combinations of colours to bring to her work. She hopes that her work will be seen by a wider public, to “bring them warm feelings and to inspire people to be more cheerful”.
Painting provides her with a sense of tranquillity, warmth and happiness. The fact that others enjoy her art, and feel more cheerful because of it, gives Julia Woning real satisfaction.
Her work can be seen in several galleries throughout the country, in particular the De Kunstkeuken gallery, which exhibits one of her largest collections.
